Bone density generally reaches its peak in early adulthood. After this point, the focus shifts from building the greatest possible amount of bone to preserving the strength already established.
During perimenopause, hormone levels can become unpredictable. Oestrogen may rise and fall before settling at a lower level after menopause. Because oestrogen helps protect bone tissue, this hormonal transition can accelerate bone loss.
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become less dense and more vulnerable to fracture. It is sometimes called a silent condition because you may not know that your bones have weakened until a fracture occurs.
The wrists, hips and spine are among the areas commonly affected by osteoporotic fractures. A fracture can affect confidence, mobility and independence, which is why early prevention matters.

Strength Training: Giving Bones a Reason to Stay Strong
Bones respond to physical demand. When muscles pull against bone during resistance exercise, the body receives a signal that the bone needs to remain capable of handling that load.
Strength training also helps preserve muscle mass, which can decline with age and hormonal change. Stronger muscles support balance, confidence, posture, metabolism and daily function.
You do not need a gym membership to begin. Body weight, resistance bands, water bottles or light dumbbells can provide a useful starting point.
Progress Matters
Your body adapts to repeated exercise. A movement that initially feels challenging will eventually become easier.
To continue improving strength, gradually increase the demand by:
• Adding a little more resistance
• Completing an additional repetition
• Adding another set
• Choosing a slightly more challenging movement
• Slowing the movement to increase control
• Improving your range of motion
Progress should be gradual. The aim is to challenge your muscles without sacrificing safe technique.
For many women, eight to twelve controlled repetitions is a useful working range. The final few repetitions should feel challenging while still allowing you to maintain good form.
If twelve repetitions feel very easy, the resistance may be too light to keep building strength. If you cannot complete the movement with control, reduce the resistance or choose an easier version.
Weight Bearing Movement and Bone Health
Strength training is important, but it is not the only beneficial form of exercise.
Weight bearing activities are movements completed while supporting your body against gravity. Depending on your ability and health.
Walking is excellent for cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing and maintaining activity. However, walking alone may not provide enough stimulus for every area of the skeleton. Combining walking with resistance exercise creates a more complete approach.
Some impact can be helpful for bone strength, but high impact movement is not suitable for everyone. Women with osteoporosis, previous spinal fractures, significant joint pain, balance difficulties or other medical concerns should seek individual guidance before beginning impact exercise.
Why Protein Also Matters
Calcium provides mineral structure, but bones also contain a protein framework. Protein is important for muscles, connective tissue, recovery and the maintenance of physical strength.
Some women unintentionally reduce protein intake during midlife because they are eating less overall, skipping meals, following restrictive diets or relying heavily on light snack foods.
Try to include a meaningful protein source at each main meal rather than eating most of your daily protein at dinner.
A supportive breakfast could include eggs, Greek yoghurt or porridge made with milk and topped with seeds. Lunch might include tuna, beans, chicken, tofu or cottage cheese. Dinner can then include another serving of fish, meat, pulses or soya foods.

Repeated crash dieting can make it difficult to obtain sufficient calcium, vitamin D, protein and total energy. Significant weight loss can also affect muscle mass if protein and resistance training are not prioritised.
Healthy changes do not need to involve severe restriction. Consistency and nourishment are more helpful than repeated cycles of strict dieting.
Digestive Health
Coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions that reduce nutrient absorption may affect bone health. Long term digestive symptoms, unexplained weight loss or persistent diarrhoea deserve medical assessment.
Medication
Certain medications can influence bone density, particularly when used for long periods. These can include some steroid medicines and certain treatments for cancer or other medical conditions.
Never stop prescribed medication without medical advice. Ask your GP or pharmacist whether your medication affects bone health and whether monitoring is recommended.
Supporting Your Future Strength
Bone health is sometimes discussed through fear, but it can be approached through empowerment instead.
Perimenopause and menopause offer an opportunity to build habits that support much more than bone density. Strength training can improve confidence and daily function. Adequate protein can support energy and recovery. Calcium rich foods can contribute to an overall nourishing diet. Vitamin D supports both bones and muscles.
You do not need to overhaul your lifestyle in one week.
