Navigating Food Labels: Making Informed Choices
Don't fall for food label tricks. Learn how to decode packaging and make informed choices for your health. Read the blog now!

In today’s fast-paced world, the supermarket aisle can feel more like a marketing minefield than a place of nourishment. Buzzwords like “natural,” “low-fat,” and “sugar-free” are plastered across packaging, but what do they really mean? Understanding how to navigate food labels is essential if you want to make empowered, informed choices that support your long-term health and wellbeing.

At New Vitality, we believe that nutrition education is foundational to whole-body wellness. Whether you’re exploring my services or following our blog for simple strategies, learning how to decode packaging is a vital part of that journey.

Why Navigating Food Labels Matters

Marketing often disguises what’s truly inside your food. Even products that seem healthy may be loaded with added sugars, trans fats, or artificial preservatives. Navigating food labels gives you the power to:

  • Avoid misleading claims
  • Choose nutrient-dense options
  • Improve digestion and gut health
  • Support energy and hormone balance
  • Reduce exposure to processed additives

This aligns closely with my philosophy, a holistic, personalised approach to wellness.

1. Understand the Nutrition Facts Panel

Start with the serving size, all nutrients listed reflect this amount. Pay attention to:

  • Fats: Look for low saturated fat and avoid trans fats.
  • Sugars: Watch for both added and natural sugars. Aim for under 5g per 100g for a low-sugar option.
  • Fibre: High-fibre foods (at least 3g per serving) are essential for digestion, hormone balance, and blood sugar control.
  • Protein: Opt for whole food sources of plant-based or lean animal protein.

2. Ingredients List: Shorter is Better

Ingredients are listed by quantity, the first few make up most of the product. Red flags include:

  • Sugar under multiple names (glucose, maltodextrin, corn syrup)
  • Artificial additives (E-numbers, preservatives)
  • Refined oils (vegetable oil, palm oil)

Aim for real, recognisable foods. A great way to get more whole-food ingredients into your routine is by growing your own with a Tower Garden, which I personally use and recommend.

3. Watch Out for Misleading Marketing Terms

These are designed to make food seem healthy:

  • “Light” or “Low-fat” often means added sugar or salt to boost flavour
  • “Multigrain” isn’t the same as whole grain
  • “No added sugar” doesn’t mean sugar-free, it could still contain fruit concentrates or artificial sweeteners
  • “Natural” has no legal definition and may still contain additives

This is where guidance from a professional can help. Learn more about my Programmes that support long-term, sustainable health goals without confusion.

4. Use Labels to Support Specific Goals

Whether your goal is improving digestion, balancing hormones, or managing cravings, food labels can be a powerful ally when understood correctly. Many clients are surprised to discover the root cause of fatigue, bloating, or brain fog lies in everyday food choices.

I cover these deeper insights in personalised consultations. Book your free mini consultation to discuss how we can personalise your nutrition strategy.

5. Tips for Smarter Label Reading

  • Shop the perimeter of the store, fewer labels, more whole foods
  • Use a magnifying glass app if font is too small
  • Don’t be afraid to put products back if the label doesn’t serve your health goals
  • Compare similar products and choose the one with fewer, better-quality ingredients

Empowering yourself with food knowledge creates lasting change. When you’re not ruled by hype, your choices begin to reflect your body’s real needs.

It’s About Progress, Not Perfection

Navigating food labels is a key step in reclaiming your health. It’s not about perfection, it’s about awareness. With knowledge and support, you can start making simple, powerful changes that support your wellbeing, one product at a time.
